“We stayed 2weeks at Widmouth Farm Cottages, a complex of about 10 cottages, arranged in 2 or 3 terraces, at fairly close proximity around a sort of central courtyard & looking out at each other, take note as privacy not the best.”
We were due to switch to Roundbarn cottage for the 2nd week, but the owners, at our request, kindly agreed to us staying put at Heron Cottage The cottage was nicely furnished and the hot water & c/h worked very efficiently. But at just over £200 a night the cottage was not really good value, too cramped for us (2 adults, one child and a dog). Upstairs is a nice big double bedroom with windows looking out the front t - and a much smaller 2nd bedroom with 2 small narrow twin beds- a bit of a squeeze to pass through The smaller bedroom has a view of the sea & lovely little bay below Downstairs the living toom was comfortable & adequatel furnished but rather small, with a rather small poor quality tv (no tvs upstairs either). The kitchen/ diner was also a bit cramped, and there was just the one bathroom toilet- also downstairs There are no individual gardens and the doors & windows look straight out at cottages opposite, so it can feel a bit claustrophobic The place itself is beautifully located on a hill.overlooking a nice little typical N Coast grey colored beach & bay, with plenty of walking trails around & over the magnificent cliffs. The whole area of the N Devon coast & coastal towns is pretty steep (take note those of you with dodgy knees) and staggeringly beautiful, espec when the sun comes out Driving out of the property onto the main road at the top is a bit tricky, it's hard to see clearly both ways & traffic zooms along at some speed, so caution is advised There's no network at the property so you have to use wifi. The place is owned by a family who live in a nice big house on the property itself, husband wife & daughter. The daughter is the appointed manager but we hardly ever saw her. The mum is a very nice lady, often found gardening and I very much enjoyed chatting with her, but bottom line they don't really seem to bother much or care for their guests, not just our opinion bit a couple of other guests too. For contact they only give you a landline & there's no network so you can't get through to them without leaving the place & walking up the steep hill to the top of the road. Why can't they provide a mob no so you get them on Whatsap. In the 2 days prior to leaving London, I called the manager daughter 3 times & she never picked or returned my calls. That's not a good initial impression and our stay sort of confirmed that. They just leave you to yourself, tho I stress they're all v nice people Final point: you can't check-in is before 4.00pm but have to be out by 10.00am, that seems to be the rules all over these day and it's a bit unfair & stressful Joanna & Tony
