“Absolutely fantastic place.”

Plenty of room for everyone and each bedroom with its own en suite. Well furnished and great lounge with a balcony overlooking it. Upstairs is another very comfortable lounge with a great view and well stocked library (as our 6 year old granddaughter named it). Also well stocked with games for a rainy day although the weather was also good for us. 10/10

“What a beautiful chapel conversion!”

We had a lovely week and were fortunate with the weather. Would love to give 5* but a few things dropped it to a 4*. Mattresses need replacing in the master bedroom and double bedded room. We only used those rooms so can’t comment on other beds. The cooks knives are very blunt and need replacing. Brighter bedside lights in the master bedroom would be appreciated. The heating system failed but within 20 minutes of ringing Marcel the plumber was there which was very impressive!! There’s a few minor maintenance jobs that need doing too but having said all this there was really nothing that spoilt our week!

“Beautifully re-purposed property in a super location within easy reach of several different types of attraction.”

Ideal for a large family holiday with plenty of space both inside and out. Only issue was the very patchy wi-fi signal, which was often non-existent in some rooms.

“The Old Chapel was a delightful house with charming features and an unexpected cosiness.”

We loved the generous space within the house and wished that we could have used the grounds outdoors more but the weather was wet for most of our week. There was an unfortunate incident on the Tuesday evening when there was an attempted break-in at the property; this included two attempts to force the front door, also there were indications of two failed attempts at opening our 2 cars. The incident was reported to the police. The housekeeper, Marcel, was clearly very concerned and offered any support that we wanted. This was followed later by a similarly supportive text from the owners. We thank them heartily. You, at Sykes, did nothing. I was amazed not to receive any communication from you following my notification to your Helpdesk. I don't want discounts or vouchers but I DO want you to know that your lack of care was most certainly noted. Therefore, my likelihood to recommend you in this case is, as above, 3 out of 10. The house and its facilities and its owner/housekeepers' support, 10 out of 10. I am glad that you will be sharing this feedback with the owners.

It’s very spacious and has everything you need to make a holiday enjoyable. There’s a very good selection of books and games. The outside area is great for children to run around and play. The property is within easy driving distance to beaches and other activities. We had a brilliant week!

“The renovation of this property is stunning with many attractive features but it is sadly let down by the absence of expected up-to-date facilities and hygiene which severely and adversely affected our enjoyment.”

This lovely home is downgraded with the many and various annoying niggles that become preeminent in your feelings of enjoyment, safety, comfort and relaxation. Nothing could have been resolved by a phone call to the owners or Sykes. We took the view that our stay should not be interrupted as we were also visiting a terminally ill relative each day. In the kitchen there is one mismatched chipped mug and one large chipped plate. Some old crazed plates and bowls distract from the food placed in them. The induction hob does well with the bumpy, dirty bottoms of most of the provided old frying pans. Weak plastic utensils and blunt knives add to the frustration of cooking for 8 with several inadequate, small pans. We shopped for satisfactory implements and fly spray (see later). The microwave oven had someone else’s leftovers stuck to the plate. The fridge had a huge clump of ice with something stuck in it; it needs defrosting and cleaning. The fan oven never reaches the required temperature: meals had to be cooked using the ordinary oven. Several of the kitchen cabinet handles are pitted and uncomfortable in the hand and are ready for replacement. The door to the utility room toilet area was difficult to open at the beginning of the week as it caught on the floor and injured a guest’s chest as she anticipated it opening. The table mats in the dining area were sticky to touch so these and the table were cleaned. In the lounge unsecured rugs presented a trip hazard for several of the party. After one of the party had to be saved from a dangerous fall against the fireplace we put the rugs in the corner of the room for the rest of the stay. All the beds in the bedrooms were basic but the pillows were thin and unwelcoming. In the en-suite in the main bedroom the lock is still suspect despite notes in the log (August 2019, July 2022). The toilet seat doesn’t fit and is twisted. The extractor fan doesn’t work so towels were always damp and this was the same in the other bedroom on the first floor. The ‘balcony’ has no seating area and there are no seats in the bedroom. The floor area above the garages is uneven. On Tuesday night four of us were woken by the gate from the balcony down to the kitchen area banging. It had to be secured by a chair from outside the kitchen being placed against the gate as the lock was completely ineffective: the latch was misaligned, rusty and cannot be fastened. The outside security light constantly illuminates the bedroom window and needs attention. In the second bedroom on the first floor the hanging rail is so close to the shelf that you endanger fingers when hanging a garment up. The extent of the grounds is clearly advertised but its suitability for walking on is not indicated. Where was the boundary? Could we reach the coast? What features were worth noting? The proximity and access to prominent places of interest is exaggerated, for example, access to nearby towns as mentioned by others in the log. Outside the kitchen there are 3 rickety chairs with a small damaged and dangerous table which we cleaned as all were covered with bird faeces: the remains of the plasterer’s work is still on the wooden planking in front of you. Four chairs and an equally inadequate table rests alongside a pond. We returned each evening for a relaxing drink but we couldn’t all sit down and certainly not in the same place. We searched by the wood store where, it was promised in the folder, other outdoor furniture could be found which we were free to use: another exaggeration as this consisted of one broken chair and an unusable barbecue. When we arrived, part of the wooden porch above us lay on the entrance tiles. We were greeted by an infestation of flies and the cobwebs around the doorway, inside and out, had had little impact on the numbers. We covered all our food and fought to eat faster than the flies. It was no wonder that we ate out far more frequently than planned in adjacent hostelries which, although in the country, had no flies attacking us. We live in a listed stone building in the country with cattle and sheep as neighbours but we have never been subjected to such an onslaught with nothing to combat our unwanted and unwelcome pests. We regularly visit cottages up and down the country and at all times of the year, but we have never ever felt so let down, frustrated, disappointed and exploited as we have with this one. This was not a home from home: it was far less from than that. It was a long way from value for money and our expectations of cleanliness, safety and well-being. During the week we had killed several flies in the master bedroom shower area. Before we left, I investigated the flies’ attraction to the shower drain. I intended to clear away any hairs from our shampooing that may be there: the mess was horrific. The drain was near blocked with grey clingy matter; I felt sick that we had been using this shower all week and had paddled in this gunge. Photographs are available.

Dear Betty Thank you for your feedback, especially calling our chapel a lovely home with many attractive features and a stunning renovation. Also, thank you for your very extensive list of ‘annoying niggles’. We must admit we are very disappointed that you felt your holiday would be interrupted by calling either our caretakers, Sykes or ourselves so that we could be given the opportunity to rectify any issues. You said nothing could have been resolved, however, crockery could have been replaced and cleaning issues could have been addressed very easily. One phone call could have also reassured you about the cluster flies. I must clarify that we do not have a house fly infestation but we do suffer with cluster flies which are entirely different and are completely harmless to human health. We have sought the advice from numerous pest controllers who have treated our loft but as you are aware from reading the information in our folder (you mentioned this to Sykes) we have an almost hopeless task on our hands during the month of August when they choose to come inside our loft to over winter- they cluster on windows in sunshine but do not buzz around humans or the house so I can only presume that you giving the impression that you were under ‘attack’ and had to ‘fight’ to eat faster than the flies was your weak attempt at humour and wasn’t done to give the impression that our house was dirty. I am very pleased to say that during our 7 years of renting, 187 families have praised our house for its cleanliness. There are numerous other inconsistencies within your review which could have been cleared up if you had only given us the opportunity to discuss as they arose. On this occasion we can not change the past. We can and shall remove the rugs and replace the mug and plate. But may we suggest that in future, you confront things in the present, which then gives both parties the chance to rectify any problems and avoids lengthy reviews and responses. “We had a lovely stay and the accommodation was first rate.”

Our only criticism is that the listing says that Clovelly, with its pub and beach, is 1 mile away and that is not correct. It is 2.2 miles from the Chapel to the Clovelly visitor centre and then a further walk down to the main part of the village. In practice the nearest pub is in Hartland, 3 miles away. As there aren't any footpaths along the country roads, walking from the Chapel is not an option.

“Stunning property!”

Loads of room, spotlessly clean, fantastic location and very well equipped. We would highly recommend The Old Chapel. The location is very quiet but within easy reach of plenty of lovely places to visit. The Hartland Quay Hotel is superb for lunch and a beautiful and wild location. We also visited Combe Martin, Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and Clovelly. We would recommend Ilfracombe for a very British holiday town - cracking pasties! Woolacombe has the best beach (in our opinion). All together a great place to visit!!

Several items that weren't working properly we reported to the very nice cleaner who came just as we were leaving, which she said were most helpful to know about (eg. a tile on the roof was missing possibly as a result of Storm Evert, a shower wasn't draining properly etc). No-one from Sykes contacted us to ask had we arrived safely, were we Ok. Hence only '5' for Sykes experience. The text and email that I received is one thing but doesn't replace a conversation with someone welcoming us.

“This was our second 3-generation holiday at The Old Chapel and it was another wonderful experience.”

The cottage is so spacious and well equipped...not just in the kitchen, but also with an extensive library of books, DVDs and toys/games. Luckily the weather was superb, so we really enjoyed using the huge garden for football, rounders and kite-flying after our days out. The property is so well situated, with so many beaches and attractions within a 20 minute drive, and The Milky Way and Clovelly village are only about 2 miles away.

“Absolutely amazing place.”

We stayed there 7 of us... a family of 3 and a family of 4. Fabulous views. Very spacious. Everything there that was needed (but not a mop as we found out when we dropped a bottle of wine on the kitchen floor) We all had a fabulous holiday there, it's central for lots of places to see.. Clovelly village, heartland quay, bude, bideford, westward ho, Appledore, Tintagel to name a few places we visited. I would definitely stay here again.

Unless I overlooked it, I couldn't fine a sun umbrella to go with the garden furniture which, considering the very hot weather, made sitting outside a little uncomfortable. I also felt that the access to the village should be explained more clearly. I was well aware that Clovelly village was 1 mile away which, we thought, wouldn't be a problem walking down to it, but it wasn't explained that this could only be done in a car as the road was far too dangerous to walk with no path. As we shared two hire cars between 6 adults this meant that we had to rely on the 2 named drivers and could not walk on our own. I am sure we are not the first to experience this. I must emphasise the accommodation was first class but feel that not having to solely rely on a motor vehicle adds to the enjoyment of a holiday.

We had a proper family holiday ( four generations) and there was plenty of room for all of us. The garden was lovely for our granddaughter to play in. We found lots of great places to go to during the day ie RHS Rosemoor, and lots of places to eat in the evening. Would definitely recommend it.

“This was a superb property, very well located to explore the many attractions of North Devon.”

Very spacious, with plenty of room for the three generations of our family. We had a wonderful half term break and would love to return in the future. We were extremely lucky with the October weather and were out and about every day...although even the little ones looked forward to returning to the cosiness of our "holiday house"! All ages enjoyed the quaintness of Clovelly village, the fun at the Milky Way Adventure Park, the stunning coastal scenery at Hartland Quay and the more bustling seaside resort of Westward Ho! We had some lovely lunches out at the Hoops Inn and the Pierhouse, and have never seen such impressive Hallowe'en decorations than at The Thatched Inn, Abbotsham. All facilities were as promised and the welcome gifts of wine, chocolates and scones (complete with Jam and clotted cream) went down a treat.

The cottage is ideally based for exploring North Devon with spacious grounds and lovely views of the countryside & sea. The cottage was clean and welcoming with lots of nice comfy sofas to relax on at the end of a tiring day sightseeing, and with a well equipped kitchen should you wish to self cater. A highly recommended property.

The property

This fabulous, detached chapel conversion is situated in a rural location just one mile from Clovelly, a picturesque coastal village in North Devon.

Now a bright, contemporary holiday home with eight foot high church windows, this spacious property overlooks its own 10 acres of meadows, where sheep graze and guests can wander.

The property sits in an idyllic, rural setting and enjoys far-reaching views of the sea and Lundy Island, while the interior of this impressive conversion is equally striking.

A large hallway leads to a light sitting room, with vaulted ceilings and three large sofas facing a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, housing a multi-fuel stove.

From the hall, a spiral staircase ascends into a galleried snug overlooking the sitting room.

It has a good library of books, and when you need a bit of peace and quiet, it's the perfect place to catch up on some reading and enjoy the views of the countryside.

Next to the spacious kitchen, which has a breakfast area and a separate utility, the dining room has plenty of space for the whole family to gather together.

Upstairs is conveniently arranged, with two en-suite bedrooms on the first floor and two bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor, all reached via a traditional staircase.

The master bedroom has a TV and a balcony, with wonderful sea views across the meadows and wildlife pond.

The garden, meadows and pond provide a fabulous setting for family picnics, walks and ball games in the summer.

Lundy, the largest island in the English Channel, can be seen from here and regular boat trips to the island are available from nearby Bideford.

With its ample collection of long, sandy beaches, this area of Devon is a great for swimming, kitesurfing and bodyboarding, or, for an easy afternoon, visit the charming fishing village of Clovelly and try and spot the donkeys trundling up the hill with their packages.

With so many wonderful things to see and do, a stay in this beautiful chapel conversion provides the family with a huge variety of activities.
