“An attractive and well-kept property, with welcoming and helpful owners living next door.”

The two double rooms are lovely and the living-dining room cosy and light, with doors onto a very nice outdoor seating area that has walls on two sides, the surrounding gardens on the other two and views across the countryside with the Somerset levels in the distance. And it is SO peaceful. The addition of a shower in the upstairs bathroom would make it near perfect. As well as being a relaxing base, it’s very well placed for visiting Wells, Glastonbury, Cheddar and a host of other places ...

“Perfect location for exploring Somerset and very attractive scenery around the property.”

Limited space in the house but you don’t feel cramped - furnishings I.e. sofa and chairs pretty basic and not at all comfortable.Also with dogs, we had two, a larger area of garden would be very beneficial as trying to exercise dogs in that small fenced off area is not adequate. Lanes around a death trap to walk along. Otherwise, I would book the property again and we definitely enjoyed our stay - Guy and Laura v. hospitable and very abliging.

I'm sorry that you found the seating uncomfortable. We have not received any other complaints about the John Lewis sofa and armchairs. I also think the size of the garden is shown accurately in the photographs and is really not intended for exercising dogs - it is an outside sitting area to enjoy the view and the flowers and for dogs to have a wee. You will have found books in the cupboard on local dog walks and a laminated map showing our closest walk across the fields and that begins some 30m from the gate onto the lane, that I would not describe at all as a death trap: it is a rather lovely single-track lane with wild flowers growing on the banks and leads to a bridle path, also indicated on the map. “On arrival there was no greeting from the owners, just the key left on the floor in the wet outside the door, the cottage was very small which proved to be a blessing as the heating was set and locked at a maximum 19 degrees, only coming on twice a day for a short period of time, not allowing for the cottage to get warm enough to last, they provided a basket of logs and a few pieces of kindle but after that we would have to pay 12 pounds for more logs, hence we purchased more from the local garden centre, the beds were uncomfortable, and the kitchen utensils ie pots, pans, cutlery etc in poor condition, the cottage needs an upgrade and a more thorough clean, we were asked to strip the bedding before we left to which we did,however on doing so found the duvets to be stained and yellow in patches, in all the cottages we have stayed in over the years this has to go down as the most disappointing, the price we paid for the weekend was very much overpriced considering the standard.”

“Perfectly placed cottage attached to a large house in beautiful surroundings.”

The Coach House was very private accessed from a large courtyard with covered parking for 2 guests cars. The garden was very secure, which we appreciated with the 2 dogs in our party, with garden furniture and fabulous views across the valley. The accommodation consisted of 2 large double rooms, 1 downstairs, and a twin room. There are 2 bathrooms. The kitchen was small, but well equipped. There are many sightseeing opportunities nearby - Stourton House (NT), Alfred's Tower and Lytes Cary Manor (NT). Wells is very close, and Shepton Mallet provides shopping needs only a couple of miles away. There is excellent walking in any direction and a heritage railway line within hearing distance. The nearest pub (1.5 miles), the Poachers Pocket, serves very good food. We really enjoyed the Coach House.

“Overall the property is a bit small and tired.”

The first contact from the owner was to send through the riot act around what you could and couldn’t do which wasn’t exactly welcoming. I’m sure it was all consistent with the terms from Sykes so really wasn’t necessary to send again as a “welcome” email. When we arrived at the property it was clear the photographer had been creative with the angles of the photos to make it look like a standalone “cottage”. It isn’t a cottage at all, it is a semi detached building at the back of a main house. You are told to park in the spaces opposite which is actually a covered area full of the owners old bikes and junk and not exactly easy to park in. Inside the communal areas are cramped and furniture tired. Garden area is tiny and beds in the single room are something from the 1900’s with wooden frames that creak with thinnest mattress known to man . Has lots of spiders and the skylight in the single room looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for decades. Two of our party of 6 decided to go home after the first night. Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend it given the cost is not exactly cheap.

“We have stayed at a lot of sykes cottages but unfortunately this is the first negative review we have had to write as we were very disappointed with the coach house.”

The garden was very small and inside the sitting area was very small and the 2 seater sofa was old and uncomfortable also it only had seating for 5 people when it sleeps 6. The quality of the bedding was very poor. There was also no welcome pack not even tea coffee or milk for arrival. The shower was broken on arrival and not repaired during our stay. Given the above comments we feel the coach house is over priced and differently not value for money. However on the positive side the cottage is in a beautiful location.

There is soft seating for 6 people - the 4th armchair is by the stairs but can be moved as needed. However, I note there were only 2 people in your party. The cleaner has confirmed that the shower was working on the day of your arrival. The plumber does not quite understand how you managed to break it but replaced it on the day of your departure as soon as we saw it was broken. We believe that the photos of the property represent it accurately and were taken by Sykes, not us. We do appreciate guests putting their rubbish in the wheelie bins provided and sorting recycling as requested, multiple times, and not leaving bin bags on the ground to attract vermin; and we do not appreciate guests trying to sneak (2) dogs into the property when they are not on the booking form. “We had a very nice week at the Coach House.”

It was well equipped and warm and cosy, with comfortable beds and plentiful hot water. We'd been warned that the WiFi signal was variable as it is a rural location, but it was fine in the living room (although sometimes weak in the bedrooms) and perfectly adequate for what we needed. We did take some DVDs with us as suggested, as the TV isn't a 'smart' one. The basket of logs provided lasted us all week. It was peaceful and quiet, with views of the surrounding countryside, and well placed for visiting Wells, Glastonbury and Cheddar.

“The cottage was nice and well equipped but it was so cold….”

Not cost at all. We did speak with the owners and they assured us that the heating was on timer to come on twice a day when the thermostat hit 18… well it did kick in but it must go off at about 19 degrees and the radiators never got hot only warm before they went off again and the thermostat was in a locked case so guests aren’t allowed to change it in any way…. I had my two young sons with me and we had to go out and buy warmer clothes and slippers for round the house. The log fire in the living room was great but as the heating was so bad we used all the firewood in one day and then had to get another two baskets at £12 per basket… the owners did offer us one basket for free which was lovely of them. I wouldn’t not recommend staying here but If you stay in the winter take extra layers for inside the cottage and extra money for baskets of wood.

This annex from the main house is in a rural setting so very peaceful and the property is very cosy. Being rural the Wifi is intermittent and weak signal so nice escape for us! The location is very close to Shepton Mallet and perfect for exploring Somerset sites. Thank you Laura.

In addition the location is gorgeous and the owners very friendly and helpful. There were two relatively small things we would mention which are easily and inexpensively addressed that would make future stays better. These are firstly the addition of a small coffee table in front of the sofa to replace the wicker stool on which it is very precarious to place any mugs or glasses and secondly some investment to replace the rather ‘tired’ pillows in the bedrooms which we all suffered from and impacted on our sleep.

“This was our second visit to The Coach House and it was even better than the first.”

The kitchen has been upgraded with a dishwasher and larger fridge. Everything was very comfortable and clean. It is situated in an exposed hilltop location, with lovely long distance views, while at the same time being very warm and toasty when the wind is howling. The location is excellent for touring. We loved day trips to Wells, Frome and the Clarks Outlet Village at Street. Castle Cary is pretty and worth a look. I'm certain we will return.

“Overall rather disappointing- tiny garden fenced off from the huge plot with a padlocked gate.”

Very cramped inside for 5 adults. On arrival there was urine on the toilet seat. There were also old shrivelled up ‘chips’ in the pots and pans drawer, therefore it obviously hadn’t been cleaned. Very bad WiFi reception and not allowed to stream. Main disappointment is accusation of damage caused by us to a shelf in the fridge door for which Sykes took the money direct from our bank account as per their policy, however, we still dispute causing the damage - very petty over £20. Sykes did not respond to our email and thereafter three telephone calls were made to follow this up, but no call back was received after they promised to investigate and respond. Awful customer service from Sykes. If you do book, make sure you video any damages before you take possession of the property. Not value for money in our opinion.

Lovely rural walks on the doorstep yet close to local towns and places of interest. The Coach House has everything you need, bedrooms were spacious with wonderful views over the landscape. “The cottage was in a really good location, about 10 minutes from Shepton Mallet town centre.”

It was clean, with lots of equipment in the kitchen and space for the two of us and our two dogs. The garden was a little smaller than it appears in the photos but was still ok and had a lovely view. The WiFi wasn't very strong so might cause an issue if you like to stream lots of TV or films. There were quite a few rules for dog owners but they didn't turn out to be too much of an issue and they are listed in the terms and conditions when booking. There was a lovely book of dog walks left for us which we made use of a number of times.

It was warm, the kitchen was well equipped and the beds were comfortable. We were not sure if the cleaning was to Covid standard as there were still animal hairs on the settee and some shelves in the kitchen were dusty. The kerb appeal was not inviting, some potted plants and a tidy up would be good. We did have to get a bulb replaced in the bathroom. The owners responded immediately. Having 2 parking spaces was great and the fact that they were under cover was a bonus.

“Lovely rural location and really nice views, but quite isolated.”

Bedrooms were of good size and beds were comfortable. Overall, the house was much smaller than we hoped. Stayed there for a week and our adult sons and their girlfriends stayed for a few days. Sleeps six but may suit family with young children but not six adults. Living room too small and not even enough sofa/armchair seats for six people. The kitchen had basic equipment but was very small. Garden looks much bigger in the picture but the picture is misleading as it is tiny. Not big enough for young children to run around. Low picket fence would not confine a large dog. MAIN PROBLEM: THE HOUSE IS ATTACHED TO THE OWNER’S HOUSE. They have annexed a small part of their large house and garden for the holiday house but their patio is next to the tiny back garden. Owners intolerant of noise. Complained that our arrival back at 11pm woke them up. Little understanding that we were on holiday and 11pm is not very late. Says dog friendly but the owner complained, when we left the dog alone in the house, so that we could go out for dinner. We were told that we “were not allowed” to leave the dog in the house alone, even though this was not made clear when booked or mentioned before we arrived. This was on day 2 of our seven days. We felt that the owner didn’t want the inconvenience of the dog whining/barking when we left her in the house. If you claim to be dog friendly, then you need to allow dogs to be left alone in the house. This impromptu rule meant that we were forced to take the dog everywhere we went. The rest of the week had to be planned around activities where dogs were allowed, which spoilt our trip. We were unable to do some tourist activities together, as one of us had to stay with the dog. We had to make two separate trips to Shepton Mallet prison so that one of us stayed with the dog. We had been advised not to approach the owner directly but email/text issues, which was fine. However the owner decided to break own rules by approaching one of our guests to complain about the dog, rather than us, who booked and paid for the house. Other rules, which were not outlined at the beginning, seemed to be changed on the whim of the owner. It was the first time that we had a family holiday in the UK, as our trip abroad was cancelled, due to COVID restrictions. We felt the owner looked down on us and saw us as an inconvenience. As a senior manager in the NHS, I badly needed a holiday and was looking forward to a relaxing break. It was somewhat spoilt by excessive rules which suited the owner and not the users of the property. The house was very expensive for what was on offer. Only suitable for people who stay in and go to bed early, due to the intolerance of the owners. Would not recommend this to anyone.

It’s perfect for dog walking and pub lunches in old country pubs with great food. Several Market towns are nearby to visit. The Coachhouse itself is very comfortable with all the facilities you need for a comfortable, restful holiday. As you can probably tell we loved it and will definitely come back in the future.

This three bed period barn conversion is located in the village of Evercreech near to the town of Wells, a wing of the owner's home in rural Somerset, a beautiful place to commence your holiday.

Wells, England’s smallest city, is named after the springs which still bubble up today in the grounds of its splendid Bishop's Palace with its famous moat. Adjacent is the beautiful 12th century cathedral situated within a most attractive cathedral close and green.
