Why book a cottage in Tiverton?

Tiverton is a picturesque market town located in central Devon, standing at the confluence of the River Exe and River Lowman. The town’s name derives from its location, with the original name of Twy ford ton meaning ‘the town on two fords’. It is a great base to explore the outdoors as it is close to Exmoor National Park and the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Historically, Tiverton has been a prosperous and wealthy town, largely as a result of the wool trade in the 16th and 17th centuries and lace making in the 19th century. Learn all about the history and heritage of the town at the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life. The museum contains exhibitions and collections relating to manufacturing industries, agriculture and the Great Western Railway.

The Grand Western Canal runs from Tiverton to Taunton. The 11 mile stretch of canal has 24 bridges and was built to transport limestone and coal to lime kilns. There is no transport of goods today but you can enjoy a cruise along the river on a barge pulled by giant shire horses. The canal and surrounding landscape is home to countless wildlife so while you are walking or boating along, keep an eye out for dragonflies, moorhens and mallards.

Tiverton has a bustling high street with a number of shops, pubs and restaurants. The town still holds a Pannier market on most days of the week where stallholders sell everything from arts and crafts to food and drink.

There are a number of great attractions to visit if you are staying in Tiverton. Explore the remains of Tiverton Castle or visit Bickleigh Castle, a fortified manor house. Knightshayes Court is a Victorian country house and spectacular example of Gothic Revival. The woodland garden is home to one of the most varied plant collections in the country and there are some stunning scenic walks through the grounds.

Places to visit near Tiverton

Visit the nearby town of Cullompton, set within the beautiful Culm Valley. This historic market town is surrounded by beautiful countryside and has one of the most majestic churches in the country. Sandwiched between the East Devon AONB and the Blackdown Hills AONB is the town of Honiton. It is famous for lace and pottery making and has a number of shops specialising in antiques.
